I don't understand why people haven't figured out that algorithmic social media is a terrible thing by design, and that it should be avoided. Twitter, IG, FB, all of it is pure poison and the underlying problem isn't who owns it.

It doesn't need to be part of our lives, and in fact we'd be better off without it. Opt out.

I can certainly understand that perspective, and I think losing their ability to practice medicine and being sued into penury is adequate, our jails are full enough. On that note however they aren't full of enough DUI convictions, first time or otherwise, since we all know that the first time you get caught is statistically unlikely to be the first time you actually did it.

Personally I'd make the penalties for DUI much MUCH harsher, given how many people are killed each year as a result. Driving is a privilege, not a right, much like practicing medicine.

To wit, consider the case of Charles Parsons, inventor of the steam turbine engine. He was able to do this because of the lifetime work of Henri Victor Regnault (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Victor_Regnault) characterizing the behavior of steam under pretty much every possible regime. At the time Regnault's work was largely ignored, and later forgotten, since it was only of minor academic interest.

It was only years after his death that Parsons would use his work to determine the necessary geometry of the rotors and stators in his new and revolutionary engine. Regnault certainly didn't see that coming, the people who overlooked his work didn't either, but that pure science for the sake of science helped to change the world.

So as you say, we often don't realize what we're going to do with the results of pure science until engineering catches up, sometimes decades or centuries later. Still without the pure science we'd never get the engineering.

Unfortunately when you try to explain this to people, the most common response (regardless of which side they're on) is to express that "Yes, but OUR side is right, so misrepresenting the ruling in our favor is right too."

Depending on the outcome of this behavior, he may still be subjected to ruinous civil litigation on the grounds that his actions constitute gross negligence. Ideally as you say there would be consequences for his license to practice as well. Personally I think "straight to jail" is a step too far, and people really underestimate just how effective the above mentioned steps can be when the goal is to remove someone from mainstream society.
